FET-Based Radiation Sensor:
The radiation-sensitive field effect transistor
(RadFET) uses a gate oxide/nitride layer to permanently
trap holes generated by ionizing radiation. This
results in a shift in threshold voltage that indicates
the total radiation dose received. A coarse-resolution
radiation spectrometer has been constructed from
arrays of RadFETs with metal filters that pass
different energies. Applications include monitors
for special nuclear materials, personnel dosimetry,
and cancer radiation therapy.

Fringe-Field Tactile Sensors:
Fringe-field sensors use electric fields generated
between surface electrodes to probe properties
of an adjacent work piece. Scanning the sensor
produces an image of the surface based on variations
in topography, conductivity, or permittivity of
the surface. This image can be used for surface
inspection or to control automated machining or
welding operations.
